At one point she called up my date on stage and they sang Clash covers together. After the show she let me take portraits and gave me and my date her home address in New York to hang out in the future. Ari Up was as genuine as a person can get. Her impact is undeniable on so many levels. Very cool girl. This Eyes Adrift show was one of the first I shot with a digital SLR camera and illustrates perfectly one of the early flaws with digital photography. The horrible "streaking grain" you see in the photo that was created by early digital SLRs was soon dubbed "noise" in photography circles and essentially described a horrible photograph. In case you are wondering....Yes, I had registered the domain name www.noisephotography.com prior to the term for "shit" photography being called "noise". This photo is important to me because it was shot right before the newspaper I was working for at the time purchased the Nikon D1 digital SLR. I hate to say it but the "art" of shooting a live show was never the same again. Now most photographers fire off 500 shots at every exposure and go home happy everytime. Back in the day shooting a band like Spiritualized was like a final exam in exposure. I took this photo of Vic Chesnutt in front of This Ain't Hollywood in Hamilton, Ontario on June 23rd 2009. Yesterday, I found out that he had died of an overdose on Christmas Day. This particular photo was taken just as he had left his mini van after a long hot 8 hour drive from Montreal. I remember sitting on the side walk infront of his wheelchair and watching him pull his dead legs into place for the portrait. Then with his head held up high he said "ready". Vic apparently even though insured was largely in debt to hospitals. Hopefully his death will shed light on the broken health care system in the states and help others in similar situations.
